No one should feel unsafe whilst exercising in our communities.

What is Street Harassment?

Street harassment is unwanted, aggressive, or intimidating behaviour directed at a stranger in a public place. It profoundly affects a person's sense of safety and their right to move freely. While it can happen to anyone, it is most often experienced by women and girls.

It encompasses a range of actions, including:
  • Verbal comments such as catcalling, sexually suggestive noises, crude jokes, or persistent requests for a phone number or conversation.
  • Non-verbal gestures like leering, staring, sustained honking, or aggressive whistling.
  • Physical actions such as following, cornering someone, or blocking their path.

Impact on Runners and Cyclists

For runners and cyclists, who often exercise alone or use remote public areas, street harassment can be particularly unsettling and disruptive. The focus on speed and movement often makes them easier targets for fleeting, anonymous harassment, and the isolation can amplify feelings of vulnerability.

Our Street Harassment Awareness initiative brings together running, triathlon, and athletics clubs, run groups, and companies from around Coventry and Warwickshire. Together, we're equipping people with the tools and knowledge to tackle street harassment head-on. By sharing valuable resources, supporting powerful events, and fostering open dialogue, we're building a movement for change and a culture of respect.
